Since the flavor of choice with all of the servers I administer is CentOS, it has been a struggle in getting this learning management system software to install on this distribution. Within K-12 education, Moodle is the leader with teachers however Moodle has many unresolved issues that caused our installation to be a major headache over the past year. During this time, I have been investigation other open-source learning management systems like Canvas LMS and Sakai. Both of these systems have large creditable players who back each of these systems. I have installed both Canvas and Sakai on CentOS and for my needs Canvas is the platform of choice. I will continue to watch Sakai and review this platform in the future.
Note: The installation of CentOS 5.8 is a bare network installation. I typically do this for each of my computers so that I do not install any package that the machine will not use for the specific function it is to perform.
This installation has been broken down into different sections for ease of writing and following. Part 1 is taking a fresh installation of CentOS 5.8 and installing the necessary packages to allow Canvas LMS to run.
